| Bangladeshi soldier and president (1977–81). He played an important part in the emergence of the state of Bangladesh. Appointed chief of army staff after the assassination of Mujibur Rahman (1975), he became the dominant figure within the military. His government was of a military character, even after the presidential election of 1978 which confirmed his position. He survived many attempted coups, but was finally assassinated in Dhaka. His wife, Khaleda Zia, served as prime minister (1991–96), becoming the first woman to hold the post, and was elected again (2001– ). |
