| biography:
| Painter, and Buddhist monk, born in Nan-ch'ang, SEC China. A descendant of the Ming royal house, he entered a Buddhist monastery on the collapse of the Ming dynasty, and may have feigned madness to survive the purges of the Manchu conquerors. The individualism of his ink paintings of flowers, birds, fish, and landscapes appealed to the Japanese, and his style has become synonymous with Zen painting in Japan. |
