biography: Philosopher, the founder of the Stoic school, born in Citium, S Cyprus. He went to Athens c.315 BC, where he attended Plato's Academy and other philosophical schools, then opened his own school at the Stoa poikile (‘painted colonnade’), from which the name of his philosophy, Stoicism, derives.
