| biography:
| Electrical engineer, born in Jehay-Bodegnée, E Belgium. In 1869 he built the first successful direct-current dynamo, which after various improvements he manufactured from 1871; it was the first electric generator to be used commercially, for electroplating as well as electric lighting. In 1873, in partnership with Hippolyte Fontaine, he showed that a dynamo could function in reverse as an electric motor. |
