| biography:
| Provincial administrator, born in Hsiang-hsiang, Hunan Province, SEC China. He suppressed the Taiping Rebellion in 1864 with a S Chinese Confucian army. Seeking to regenerate China, he supported the improvements in technical and linguistic education, including US scholarships, and the development of industries such as munitions and shipbuilding. He led negotiations with the West following the Tianjin massacre (1870). The New Life Movement in the 20th-c reflected his ideals. |
