| Fashion designer, born in Chatham, Kent, SE England, UK. She studied textile printing and lithography at Medway College of Art, then won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. She designed and printed textiles and, with others, opened the Fulham Road Clothes Shop in 1967, afterwards setting up on her own. She showed her first collection in 1969, and is noted for her distinctive, exotic designs in floating chiffons and silks. In London in 1975 she co-founded Zandra Rhodes (UK) Ltd and Zandra Rhodes (Shops) Ltd, and began licensing her name in the USA, Australia, and Japan. In addition to innovative clothes design, she expanded into cosmetics, jewellery, and home furnishings. In 1995 she received a British Fashion Council Hall of Fame Award for outstanding contribution to the British fashion industry. |
