| Novelist and scholar, born in Kuddnäs, W Finland. He studied at Helsinki, and became editor of the Helsingfors Tidningar newspaper (1842–78). He was appointed professor of Finnish history at Helsinki (1854–78) and rector (1875–8). Writing in Swedish, he is regarded as the father of the Finnish historical novel, with stories of life in the 17th-c and 18th-c published as Fältskärns berättelser (1851–60, The Surgeon's Stories). He also published five volumes of lyrical poetry, and wrote several plays. |
