| biography:
| Athlete, born in Caversham, Dunedin, New Zealand. An all-round athlete, she dominated the New Zealand Athletics Championships, winning the shot each year (1947–54), the long jump (1948–54), the discus (1951–4), javelin (1950), and 80 m hurdles (1954). She won the British Empire Games gold medal for the long jump and a silver medal for the javelin in 1950, also gold medals for the long jump, shot, and the discus in the Commonwealth Games of 1954, and the Olympic gold medal for the long jump in 1952. She set a long jump world record of 6·28 in 1954. |
