| biography:
| Painter, born in Paris, France. A self-taught painter, he served in the merchant navy until 1922, then joined the Surrealists in Paris (1925) and took part in all the subsequent major exhibitions. He worked in Africa from 1930, and moved to the USA in 1939, where he became a US citizen. His unique style of painting was dreamlike in character and faithful to Surrealism, being peopled with numerous small objects or organisms, whose meaning and identity, as in the landscape of another planet, are unknown. His works include ‘A quatre heures d'été, l'espoir’ (1929, Musée d'art moderne, Paris). |
