| Novelist and critic, born in Avignon, SE France. A professor of English, he became critic on L'Express, then literary director with Grasset. He received the Prix Fémina in 1962 for SUD. He has written many books on the USA, which fascinates him, including Le fou d'Amérique. Later works include La Pierre et le Saguaro (1990) and Immobile dans le courant du fleuve (1994). The poetic strength of his words has certain similarities to the style of Proust. |
