| Writer, born in Saint-Dié, E France. He studied law in Strasbourg, then went to Switzerland (1914–18), where he met Joyce, Stefan Zweig, and Hans Arp. In 1939 he emigrated to the USA where he edited (1943–6) the literary periodical Hémisphères. His poetry, which was initially Expressionist and then Surrealist, includes Der Panamakanal (1912), Die Unterwelt (1919), Poemes d'amour (1925), and Abendgesang (1954). He also wrote grotesque plays such as Methusalem oder Der ewige Bürger (1922) and satirical romans-à-clef. |
