| Physicist and politician, born in Tel Aviv, W Israel. Active against the British in Palestine (1946–7), he became a captain in the Israeli Defence Force (1947), deputy director of defence intelligence (1955–7), and defence attaché in London (1958–60). He was professor of physics at Tel Aviv (1965–73), then at the University of Texas, Austin, and (1979–97) director of the Sackler Institute of Advanced Studies. He founded the Tehiya political party and became a member of the Knesset in 1981, and has held ministerial posts in the areas of science and development. In 1983 he founded the Israeli Space Agency. In physics he has worked on the role of symmetry in particle physics, and co-authored the influential book The Eight-Fold Way with Murray Gell-Mann. |
