| biography:
| Dancer, artistic director, teacher, and choreographer, born in Leningrad (now St Petersburg), NW Russia. He trained at the Leningrad Choreographic School before joining the Kirov Ballet as a soloist in 1946. He is best known as a choreographer, his first major ballet, The Stone Flower (1957), marking a new stage for Soviet choreography. He became ballet master of the Kirov Ballet (1962), and chief choreographer and artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet (1964). He was named People's Artist of the Russian SFSR in 1966. |
