| Russian theatre director. He joined the Vakhtangov Theatre Company in Moscow after World War 2, and after the tremendous acclaim for his production of Brecht's The Good Woman of Setzuan, was appointed director of the Taganka Theatre, Moscow (1964). At the Taganka his productions included Molière's Tartuffe (1969) and a modern-dress Hamlet in 1974. He fell from favour, was fired from his theatre, expelled from the Party, and deprived of his Soviet citizenship. He subsequently worked on several productions outside the Soviet Union, but returned in 1988. |
