| biography:
| Soldier, politician, and president of Uganda (1986– ). He studied at Dar es Salaam University, then worked for President Milton Obote until his overthrow by Idi Amin (1971). From exile in Tanzania he formed the Front for National Salvation, and took part in the defeat of Amin in 1979. He became minister of defence (1979–80), but was in disagreement with Obote, who returned to the presidency in 1980 with the help of Tanzanian troops. When they withdrew in 1982, a virtual civil war ensued, and reasonable normality did not return until 1986 when Museveni became president, pledging to follow a policy of national reconciliation. |
