| Portrait photographer, born in Mardin, SE Turkey. An Armenian in Turkey, he suffered persecution before emigrating to Canada in 1924. He was apprenticed to a Boston portraitist (1928–31), and in 1932 opened his own studio in Ottawa, being appointed official portrait photographer to the Canadian government in 1935. His wartime studies of Winston Churchill and other national leaders were widely reproduced, and he continued to portray statesmen, artists, and writers throughout the world. |
