| Film director, born in Tokyo, Japan. An inveterate cinema-goer as a youngster, he joined the industry as an assistant cameraman. As a director, in the 1930s he conceived the shomin-geki genre of films, dealing with lower middle-class family life. A precise and rigorous cinematic stylist, his films offered gentle, compassionate portraits laced with humour and, latterly, underlying tragedy. An internationally prominent director, his most widely seen work includes Banshun (1949, Late Spring), Ochazuke No Aji (1952, The Flavour of Green Tea Over Rice), and Ohayo (1959, Good Morning!). |
