| Japanese statesman and prime minister (1982–7), born in Takasaki, C Japan. He studied at Tokyo University, was a junior naval officer in World War 2, and entered the ministry of home affairs in 1945. Elected to the Diet at age 29 for the Liberal–Democratic (Conservative) Party, he held a range of ministerial posts (1959–82). As premier, he supported the renewal of the US–Japan Security Treaty, and maintained close relations with President Ronald Reagan. |
