| Nigerian soldier and president (1966–75), born in Garam, NW Nigeria. He trained in Nigeria and Britain (Sandhurst Military Academy), and joined the Nigerian army, becoming adjutant-general in 1963 and commander-in-chief in 1966. He led a military takeover in 1966 and became president, but could not prevent a costly civil war which lasted until 1970. In 1975 he was ousted in a bloodless coup while in Kampala. After pursuing academic studies in Britain, he eventually settled in Togo. |
