| biography:
| Galician poet and scholar, born in San Martiño de Alongos, Orense, NW Spain. He taught Greek at Pontevedra and produced ‘Gramática gallega’ (1866), the first respectable Galician grammar. His own poems, collected in Poesías (1878) were, with the exception of nine in Galician, all in Castilian, most being delicate, and religious in theme. He left two unpublished manuscripts at his death, ‘Literatura popular de Galicia’ and ‘Colección de coplas, romances, cuentos y refranes gallegos’, the latter partly published in the Boletín Provincial de Monumentos de Orense. |
