| biography:
| Greek historian, essayist, and soldier, born in Attica. A friend and pupil of Socrates, in 401 BC he served with a group of 10 000 Greek mercenaries under Persian Prince Cyrus, who was fighting against his brother, the King of Persia. After Cyrus was killed, the Greeks were isolated over 1500 km/900 mi from home. Xenophon was elected leader, and the group successfully fought their way back to the Black Sea. This heroic feat formed the basis of his major work, Anabasis Kyrou (The Expedition of Cyrus). |
