| biography:
| Galician archaeologist, folklorist, and ethnographer, born in Orense, NW Spain. After early schooling in Orense, he went on to study philosophy and letters at the University of Santiago de Compostela, where he joined groups of ‘estudiantes galleguistas’ and the Seminario de Estudos Galegos. His orientation towards the study of Galician culture, and above all its archaeology and popular traditions, was due to the contact he established with two ‘maestros’, Florentino López Cuevillas and Vicente Risco. He helped found the Museo Etnográfico de Santiago and joined in the work of the Comisión de Monumentos de Orense and the Grupo Marcelo Macías, later becoming president of the foundation associated with the Museo do Pobo Galego. He continued teaching until he retired, first at the Instituto de Orense and then at the Colegio Cardenal Cisneros. |
