| Major figure in the warlord struggles of China (1916–27), born in Shandong province, E China. He joined the new army created by Yuan Shikai, and after Yuan's death (1916), when Duan Qirui sought to reunite China by force, Wu and other N generals refused Duan's orders. In the civil war which followed, he was unable to sustain his government of national unity (1923), and was defeated in battle near Tientsin. |
