| Actress, born in Nebraska, USA. She studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, and became a teacher, before joining a touring company in 1942. She appeared on Broadway a year later, and in 1944 moved to London. She joined the Old Vic in 1951, and became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford-upon-Avon in 1960. She has won awards for several theatre roles, including Tiny Alice (1965), Sweet Bird of Youth (1975), The Cherry Orchard (1977), and Lost in Yonkers, NY (1991). A one-woman show in 1993–4 was based on the works of Edith Wharton. Later theatre productions include The Gypsy and the Yellow Canary (1997), Tribute to Lillian Gish (1997), and Ring Around the Moon (1999). Her films include Lost in Yonkers (1993) and Onegin (1999). |
