| biography:
| Golfer, born in Cypress, California, USA. He studied at Stanford University and won amateur US golf titles before turning professional in 1996. He shot to fame after winning the US Masters at Augusta in 1997 - with a record score of 270 - at the age of 21, the first African-American to do so, as well as the youngest; in his first appearance at the British Open later that year he equalled the Troon course record of 64. His father, Earl Woods, then published a book about his son: Training a Tiger: a Father's Guide to Raising a Winner in Both Golf and Life (1997). Further successes include the 1999 and 2000 US PGA title, the US Open (2000, 2002), the Open Championhip (2000), and the US Masters (2001, 2002). |
