| Writer, born in Greifswald, NE Germany. After studying literary history and philosophy, he worked as a journalist, actor, playwright, and editor. A masterful storyteller, he focused on contemporary problems. His trilogy - Tauben im Gras (1951), Das Treibhaus (1953), and Der Tod im Rom (1954) - is about fascism in post-war Germany. He also wrote the novel Jakob Littners Aufzeichnungen aus einem Erdloch (1992) which was earlier published under a pseudonym in 1948, and travel books. He received the Georg-Büchner-Preis in 1962. |
