| Physicist, born in Heidelberg, SWC Germany. He studied at universities in Munich and at the Max-Planck Institute for Quantum Optics (1986 PhD), later joining the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He shared the 2001 Nobel Prize for Physics for the achievement of Bose–Einstein condensation in dilute gases of alkali atoms, and for early fundamental studies of the properties of the condensates. |
