| Writer born in Meuselwitz, Leipzig, EC Germany. He grew up in a mining family and worked primarily as a stoker before becoming a freelance writer. In 1979 he emigrated to the West, returning to Leipzig after the reunification of Germany. His writing includes poetry (Abwesenheit, 1979), novels (Eine Übertragung, 1989), and short stories. It shows a preoccupation with his roots and has gained him several awards, including the Brüder-Grimm-Preis (1983) and the Ingeborg-Bachmann-Preis (1989). |
