| Journalist and philosopher, born in Königsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia). In 1945 he joined the Kommunistiche Partei Deutschlands (KPD) and then the Sozialistiche Einheitspartei (SED) in 1946–56. Professor at Humboldt University Berlin (1949), he was publisher and chief editor of Deutsche Zeitschrift für Philosophie. He was imprisoned (1957–64) for his criticism of German Democratic Republic cultural policies. In 1979–81 he was resident in the German Federal Republic (BRD). He has written various philosophical works. |
