| biography:
| Religious reformer, born in Hagenau, Alsace. He entered the Benedictine order, and in 1515 became professor of theology at Basel. He approved of Luther's action, but in 1519 entered the service of Archishop Albert of Mainz. He did not declare for the Reformation until later, when he became a Protestant leader in Strasbourg. |
