| Writer, born in Frankfurt, WC Germany. One of the founders of the Gruppe 47, he was a film and theatre critic for the Deutschen Rundschau. He employed his experiences as a soldier in World War 2 and of post-war Germany in his imaginative writing, the style of which is terse and characterized by incisive criticism of contemporary society, satire, and black humour. His works encompass poetry, novels, short stories, radio and television plays, and children's books. Among several awards was the Georg-Büchner-Preis in 1983. |
