| biography:
| Polish general, statesman, and prime minister (1922–3), born in Galicia (part of modern Poland). He studied at Kraków and Lvóv, fought in the Russian–Polish War (1920–1), became commander-in-chief (1921), and premier. After Piłsudski's coup (1926) he retired and wrote a military history in Paris. He returned to Poland in 1938, but on being refused a command, fled to France, becoming commander of the Free Polish forces, and from 1940 was premier of the Polish government in exile in London. He was killed in an air crash. A national hero, his body was returned to Poland in 1993, and given a state funeral. |
