| biography:
| Polish soldier, born in Blonie, C Poland. He served on the staff of the Russian division and Polish Corps in World War 1 (1914–17). At the outbreak of World War 2 he was captured by the Russians (1939–41), but released to command a Polish ex-POW force organized in Russia, which he led through Iran into Iraq. In 1943 he became commander of the 2nd Polish Corps in Italy, capturing Monte Cassino. After the war, deprived of his nationality by the Polish Communist government, he was a leading figure in the Free Polish community in Britain, and inspector-general of the Polish forces-in-exile. |
