| biography:
| Dutch naval officer, born in Hoogendijk, SW Netherlands. He served under J P Coen and Piet Hein, taking part in the capture of the Spanish Silver Fleet. He was court-martialled for his behaviour towards Tromp in the Dunkirk blockade, but served under him a year later at the Downs. He commanded a squadron in Brazil, but returned without orders and was arrested on the orders of the stadtholder, but released. Acting commander in the First Anglo-Dutch War, he was killed in the Baltic War. |
