| biography:
| US naval officer, born in Frederick Co, Maryland, USA. He commanded the ‘Flying Squadron’ at the start of the Spanish-American War. In the absence of his commanding officer, William Thomas Sampson, he defeated the Spanish fleet (1898) and his actions led to a lasting controversy with Sampson. A board of inquiry later reported against Schley's actions in the battle (1901). |
