| Photographic editor, born in Sedalia, Missouri, USA. Picture editor at the Kansas City Star, he went to New York (1928), where he became executive editor of the Associated Press. Photographic editor at Life Magazine (1937–1950), he built the staff from four to 40 photographers, making assignments and developing the photo essay for which Life became famous. He was a professor of photojournalism at the University of Miami (1955–70). |
