| biography:
| Corporate executive, born in New York City, USA. He ended a 51-year career with General Electric as its president (1940–50), known for his tough anti-union policies and his willingness to close plants in communities dependent on GE for jobs. He directed the War Production Board (1942–4). An influential government adviser during Truman's presidency, he became chairman of W R Grace and Co in 1952. |
