| biography:
| English statesman and clergyman. He probably studied at New College, Oxford, then became provost of Eton (1443), Bishop of Winchester (1447), and founded Magdalen College, Oxford (1448). He was involved in the negotiations which ended Jack Cade's rebellion in 1450, and as a Lancastrian played an important role as adviser to Henry VI in the Wars of the Roses. He was Lord Chancellor (1456–60). |
