| Literary historian and educator, born in New York City, New York, USA. He studied at Columbia University (PhD) and spent his academic career teaching there (1945–75). His scholarly works focused on 17th-c and 18th-c English literature and theatre, and included A Cycle of Cathay (1951), Beaumont and Fletcher (1956), and books on Charles Macklin (1960) and Madame Vestris (1974). |
