| biography:
| Journalist and governor, born in Orange Co, North Carolina, USA. A self-educated Whig political writer, he became Democratic editor of the North Carolina Standard (1843), advocating secession from the Union. Switching parties again, as North Carolina's Republican governor (1868–70) he pandered to carpetbaggers, using the militia to suppress his opposition. Impeached for corruption, he returned to journalism. |
