| biography:
| Count of Holland (from 1354), also Count of Hainault (as William III) and Duke of Bavariathe (as William I), the son of Louis IV of Bavaria and Margaretha of Avesnes. He quarrelled with his mother about the rights to Holland and Zeeland, which she had inherited on the death of William IV in 1345; this developed into a conflict between the Hoeken and Kabeljauwen. William defeated his mother's fleet off Brielle in 1351 and made peace with her in 1354, was recognized as Count of Holland and Zeeland, and in 1356, after his mother's death, also became Count of Hainault. In 1357 he fell ill and became insane; from 1358 his brother, Albert (Albrecht) of Bavaria became regent. |
