| Quaker philanthropist. A tea and coffee merchant in York, he founded a home for the mentally sick (the York Retreat) in 1796, the first of its kind in England. Contemporaneously with Philippe Pinel (1745–1826) in France, he pioneered new methods of treatment and care of the insane. |
