| X-ray crystallographer, born in Longton, Staffordshire, C England, UK. He studied at Cambridge and London, and from 1945 held the new chair of biomolecular structure at Leeds. Using X-ray diffraction photographs, his pioneering studies on protein fibres laid the basis for much later work. He probably coined the phase molecular biology; and with Florence Bell in 1938 offered the first hypothetical structure for the key genetic material DNA. |
