| Surgeon and pioneer of scientific surgery, born in New York City, USA. He studied at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York City, and in Vienna. Professor at Johns Hopkins University from 1886, he established there the first surgical school in the USA. He developed a cocaine injection for local anaesthesia, became an addict in the process, was cured, then returned to Johns Hopkins. He devised successful operative techniques, including those for cancer of the breast and inguinal hernia, and pioneered the use of rubber gloves and sterile conditions in surgery. |
