| biography:
| US soldier and politician, born in Kingston, Ohio, USA. At the outbreak of the Civil War (1861–5) as a Union officer, he succeeded McClellan, and kept Lee out of Western Virginia. In 1862 he commanded a division at the siege of Corinth, and after its capture commanded the Army of the Mississippi, defeated General Sterling Price (1809–67) at Iuka, and defended Corinth against Price and General Earl Van Dorn (1820–63). He won through in the battles at Stone River (1862–3) against Bragg, but Bragg defeated him at Chickamauga. Superseded by Grant, he repelled Price's invasion of Missouri (1864). He later became minister to Mexico (1868–9), a member for California of the US House of Representatives (1881–5), and registrar of the US treasury (1885–93). |
