| Mathematician, physicist, and publisher, born in London, UK. He studied at Oxford, where he lectured in mathematics, and in 1846 succeeded his father as head of the printing house of Eyre & Spottiswoode. He did original work in polarization of light and electrical discharge in rarefied gases, and wrote a mathematical treatise on determinants. |
