| biography:
| Writer, born in St Louis, Missouri, USA. He studied at Harvard, and became a heroin addict while doing odd jobs in New York City. In 1953 he published Junkie, an account of his experiences, and his novels Naked Lunch (1959) and The Soft Machine (1961) established him as a spokesman of the Beat movement of the late 1950s. His later work, much concerned with innovations in the novel form, include Nova Express (1964), The Wild Boys (1971), Cities of the Red Night (1981), and The Western Lands (1987). His Selected Letters was published in 1993. |
