biography: Writer, born in Fresno, California, USA. He left school at 15, and began writing short stories in the late 1920s. His first volume, The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze (1934), was a great success, and was followed by a number of highly original novels and plays. He was awarded (but declined) the Pulitzer Prize for his play The Time of Your Life (1939). Among later works are the novel The Human Comedy (1943) and the memoir Places Where I've Done Time (1975).
