| biography:
| English politician, sometimes called the ‘First Whig’. He studied law, and entered the House of Commons as member for Derbyshire (1670). He became one of the leaders of the anti-Court party, instrumental in framing the Test Act, which overthrew Charles II's Cabal ministry. Defeated in the 1685 election, he sat in the Convention parliament of 1689 which offered the throne to William III. |
