| US statesman. He was educated at Bowdoin College and Boston University Law School. He became Republican senator for Maine in 1973, serving three terms before retiring in 1996. A leading critic of the administration in the Watergate and Iran-Contra scandals, he was made secretary of defense in the 1997 administration, following Clinton's election promise to appoint a Republican to his cabinet. |
